Pine Pollen 101

If you have researched pine pollen for more than a few minutes, one botanical name tends to appear again and again: Pinus massoniana.

Ask ten people what “pine pollen” comes from, and most will give the same answer: a pine tree. That is technically correct, but botanically it leaves out an important detail.

Every spring, pine forests perform a spectacle that is easy to mistake for a mess.

A breeze moves through the branches, a yellow cloud lifts into the air, and before long cars, patios, ponds, and windowsills are covered in fine golden dust. That dust is pine pollen—and for the pine tree, it has an important job to do.
